How to set this up
- Confirm your Instagram account is set up as an Instagram Business account, not a personal or creator account. Business accounts are required for API access. In Instagram, go to Settings > Account > Switch to Professional Account if needed, and select Business as the account type.
- Confirm your Instagram Business account is linked to a Facebook Page through Meta Business Manager. This link is required for API access. Connect them through Meta Business Suite (business.facebook.com) if they are not already linked.
- In LeadExploder, go to Settings > Integrations > Instagram and click “Connect Account.”
- Authenticate through Meta’s Business Manager flow. Log in with the Facebook account linked to your Instagram Business profile. Grant the permissions LeadExploder requests: Instagram Basic Display, Instagram Messaging, and Pages Messaging.
- Select your Instagram Business profile from the list of connected accounts and click Save.
- Go to Settings > Conversation AI > Channel Rules, select Instagram DM as the channel, and configure the AI behavior: qualification questions to ask, how to handle pricing inquiries, which calendar to book into, and whether the AI is active 24/7 or only after hours.
- For Instagram Lead Ads: after the Business Manager authentication in step 4, go to Settings > Integrations > Facebook and select your Instagram Lead Ad forms for sync. Map the form fields to LeadExploder contact fields as you would for Facebook Lead Ads.

Frequently asked questions
Does this integration handle Instagram Stories and post comments, or only DMs?
The DM integration handles Instagram Direct Messages, which includes replies to Stories (Story replies thread as DMs). Standard comments on feed posts are not managed through this integration. Comment-to-DM keyword triggers require additional configuration that is not part of the base integration setup. Ask the LeadExploder team about keyword comment automation during your onboarding to understand what is available on your plan.
What happens if a prospect DMs while Conversation AI is active and I also want to respond?
Any team member with access to the LeadExploder unified inbox can take over a DM conversation at any point. When a human team member sends a message from the inbox, the AI pauses on that specific conversation thread. If the conversation goes inactive again (no human response within a configured window), the AI can re-engage based on your channel rules. The full conversation history is visible in the inbox at all times, so there is no context gap when switching between AI and human responses.
Does the integration require a Facebook Page as well as an Instagram Business account?
Yes. Instagram Business accounts must be linked to a Facebook Page through Meta Business Manager to access the Business API that this integration uses. This is a Meta requirement, not a LeadExploder requirement. If your Instagram account is not yet linked to a Facebook Page, connect them through Meta Business Suite (business.facebook.com) before attempting the LeadExploder integration setup.
